I just had my carburetor rebuild on my 1973 CT3. It fires up first kick and starts off strong. It seems to bog down when it gets close to red line. Especially when I’m going up a hill. It kind of sputters right before I’m about to shift. Does anybody think this could be just a simple adjustment on the carburetor?

Ok sounds like a plan. I will pull the plug and take a clear photo of it right after I shut it off without letting it idle after I ride.
Thank you, Devin and Dave! Dave sent my Carburetor back after cleaning “the gunk & dirt” out and installing a new O-ring. He kindly educated me on how to put the cable/spring back together correctly through a detailed video. I think it was only a one week turnaround between sending it from Pittsburgh to South Dakota and back.
I had a busy weekend at work so I decided to wait until today (Monday, 03/24), to fire it up. I am excited to say that the CT3 ran like a champ. In fact, I’ve never had it run so well. I only took a short ride but I noticed a a big difference already. It runs great WITH NO BOG! I plan on taking a longer ride tomorrow so I will post again how that goes. Wow, I figured something was fishy about that motorcycle shop garage whenever I came and picked it up. Something just didn’t seem right from the energy I got from “mechanic”.
Thank you so very much for the instruction on how to put that throttle cable back in. I must admit I was a bit concerned about it, but I think I should be good with that detailed instruction.

The carburetor for the 73 CT3 should have arrived in South Dakota at Dave’s mailbox. I am so grateful that you’re doing this for me. Also, I noticed that somebody tried painting that Carburetor black at one time and I must admit I’m not too thrilled about it. If that can be stripped without being much of a problem, please do but I’m more concerned about it performing well of course. Please let me know that you have received the Carburetor? Devin & Dave, I’m sending that Carburetor your way to Spearfish tomorrow USPS. I’m missing out on great riding weather here in Pittsburgh so I might send it priority 1-3 days. I’m very grateful that you are willing to do this for me.
You know, I’m not quite sure I didn’t ride it very much before I had it rebuilt but do not recall it happening. I took it into the shop to have them check to make sure the auto-lube is working and for them to go over the whole bike for safety so I can ride my with my son. The carburetor was leaking fuel at idle so they recommended me to have it rebuilt. They also replaced the intake boot that connects to the carburetor, spark plug, air filter, fuel filter and pet-cock. I just got back from a ride and I definitely need to take care this issue.
I’ll tell you what I’m not concerned about the money and I am happy to pay, but I would love to have it done by a professional (you or enduronut). If I buy the parts and remove the carburetor, can I ship it to one of you guys to do it for me?
Or perhaps I could remove the Carburetor and send it to somebody you recommend to rebuild it with all OEM mikinni parts?
OK with that being said, would you be able to lead me to where I can order a genuine OEM rebuild kit? I am fairly mechanically inclined and I think I might be able to do it myself.
Wow. I wish you were here for your guidance! I agree and think it’s in the carburetor and the mechanic wasn’t so good after all. I will do another rebuild myself unless I can order a replacement carburetor already done? Thank you very much for the knowledgeable input!
The following diagnosis is based on my interpretation of what you've said so far:
The more information I have, the more I'm able to help, but nothing is quite as good as being there in person. Ha ha
If the bike wasn't acting that way before the rebuild, then you can be sure that the problem is carburetor related.
I might also add, that just because a shop mechanic has rebuilt the carb, doesn't necessarily mean it was done right. I've met, and worked with, both good and bad "professional" mechanics.
The first thing I think of when you described your bike's symptoms, is that the little O-ring (part #5 in the attached photo) is bad, and needs to be replaced . . . It's Yamaha part number 214-14147-00-00
but . . . do you happen to know if the mechanic replaced any specific parts during the rebuild? It could be that the main jet was changed out for a slightly larger one, or that the jet needle was raised by lowering the circlip one notch.
Less likely, is that the timing could be off... it has a bad spark plug ... a plugged up exhaust pipe ... or even a dirty air filter.
