Hello, need some help here. Working on a 1971 DT1 and it has some headlight circuit issues as some of the wiring got hot some how. This is a recent purchase from Bring a Trailer. After looking at the main switch/ignition switch it appears that the second position will turn on the tail light and instrument lights but the head light circuit doesn't appear to be energised. I need a clear wikring diagram to assist me. Does the engine have to be running to energise the head light circuit or do I have other promblems with the wiring circuit to head light?

Welcome.
If you want, feel free to post some pictures of your new bike. As Enduronut mentioned, I am a little busy working on the website. It is running very slow, at the moment, until I fix the issue. I plan to create custom made colored wiring diagrams in the future, as well as a vape version, for every model.
OK . . . found the colored version 😊

Hello onehammerhead . . . First of all, welcome to the forum!
The site administrator is busy at the moment, so he asked me to weigh in on the matter.
I don't know if you've looked around on the site yet, but we have a "Digital Library" link on the home page. (directly underneath the yellow RZ350 bike ... left side of page)
Enter the library and scroll down a little until you find the 71 DT1E Service Manual .... The manual will contain a wiring diagram, and other related information about the lighting circuit.
If you need a colored version of the wiring diagram, that may take a bit of looking to find one . . . I don't have that specific color diagram for the DT1E, but will post a black & white picture of the 71 RT1 wiring, which should be the same.
I suggest you make sure all light bulbs are good before trouble shooting. Also helps if you have a good, fully charged battery in place.
But to answer your question, ... yes, the engine must be running before the headlight will come on.
