Hello guys! Now I´m working on assembling the motor. Crankshaft is restored. After assembling left and right housing sides there was no more space between crankshaft and left housing side, not able to turn the crankshaft. Again disassambled the housing and used the shim (0,3 mm) for which the service manual says "Put shim on right side of the crankshaft, and install the crankshaft into left case half". Now I have the shim between the left housing side and the crankshaft (and removed the ridge, see red arrow on the foto) and everything is fine (approx. 0,7 mm space between left housing side and crankshaft).
Before I install the right housing side again I want to ask for your opinion because my assembling sequence is not the same as in the service manual.
Thx a lot for the detailed description. Sounds logical. I will organize a set of shims and try left side with 0,1 mm, right side with the original 0,3 mm.
I'm not there in person to see everything, but I will make a suggestion for you to try.
First, it's normally a good idea to check a crankshaft that has been restored, just to make sure it meets the Yamaha rebuilt specifications. However, I doubt that's the problem
Perhaps you did check . . . I'm just giving some useful advice to anyone who reads this in the future.
I'm concerned that you may run into a problem when you tighten the nut down that holds the primary clutch gear in place . . . without a shim there to stop it, It may pull the crankshaft tight against the right hand side . . . causing the same binding issue you first experienced on the opposite (left) side.
I would start over again, and put the shim back on the right side.
Then, when you reinstall the crankshaft into the left side, only tighten or pull the crankshaft into the left case until you start to feel it squeeze against the correct size of feeler gauge blade .... In other words, don't tighten the left side as far as it can go ... leave a small amount of clearance so it doesn't rub the case.
The right side must pull up tight against the shim ..... that's the side that really matters.
I think you'll find that the left side clearance will take care of itself if the right side is done correctly.
Good luck, and let us know how it goes.
I think the service Manual is more of a recommendation on what order to do it. If you are able to do it, the way you are, and don’t have problems, it should be ok.
